The New Market, Esplanade, Kolkata, was designed by architect Richard Roskell Bayne and opened on 1st January 1874, built under British colonial administration as a regulated shopping space for European residents of Calcutta. It was named after Sir Stuart Hogg, then Chairman of the Calcutta Municipal Corporation. The Bengali community affectionately called it Hogg Saheber Bazaar.
The Victorian Gothic architecture, characterised by a red-brick facade, arched entrances, and a clock tower, is one of the few remaining examples of colonial municipal architecture still in active commercial use in India. Post-Independence, the market gradually opened to all communities and has since drawn shoppers from across West Bengal. Calcutta New Market was once an exclusive European enclave and is now one of the most democratically accessed markets in India.

Camera Equipment: Motilal Sil Street, a bylane off Dharmatala, sometimes called Metro Gali, has a cluster of shops selling camera bodies, lenses, lighting, and accessories. Vintage camera enthusiasts should visit M A Photographic Centre for Bell and Howell, Zeiss Ikon, and Kodak Brownie models.

The New Market, Esplanade, Kolkata is at its most atmospheric during the Christmas season. The red-brick arcade is decorated with faux fir trees, large balloons, bells, and streamers, and the confectionery shops do their best trade of the year.
Nahoum and Sons (Established 1902): One of the last Jewish-owned bakeries in India, operating from the same stall inside the New Market for over 120 years. The plum cake, rum balls, marzipan, and Christmas cake are exceptional. During the festive season, queues form before the shutters open.
Kolkata Rolls: Egg and chicken rolls made with a flaky paratha base, available throughout the market and surrounding streets. One is usually a full meal.
